Academic staff union of universities (ASUU) prepare to embark on strike as their demand had not been fulfill by the federal government, Monday,  7th February, 2022 had been declared lecture free day as other procedure emerge to embark on the strike follows if the union demands are not honored.

ASUU DEMANDS

Academic staff union of universities (ASUU) demands have barely changed since the signing of the ASUU/FG 2009 agreement.

These demands include the sustainability of the university autonomy, which it said the introduction of IPPIS violates; immediate deployment of UTAS to replace IPPIS; renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement; release of the reports of visitation panels to federal universities and distortions in salary payment challenges.

Others include funding for revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowance, poor funding of state universities and promotion arrears.

SAYS ASUU PRESIDENT

Academic staff union of universities (ASUU) national president, Emmanuel Osedeke, a professor, confirmed the directive and also that the national body had instructed all the chapters to sensitise the public “on the nobleness of its cause”.

“We are going to have a meeting that day, we will invite as many people as possible to talk about the issue of Nigerian education,” he told our reporter in a telephone interview on Saturday.

OPINIONS FROM PEOPLE

“The new threat comes less than a week after President Muhammadu Buhari pledged the commitment of his administration to fulfilling the agreement with the union. Mr Buhari made the promise when members of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) visited him to share thoughts with him on the lingering issues. While making the pledge, Mr Buhari, however, pleaded with the union to exercise patience and consider current economic realities.”

Imagine that, Mr Buhari pleading with the union to exercise patience and consider current economic realities, the same realities politicians routinely ignore while milking the treasury dry for nefarious reasons. Nigeria is ruled by WICKED men who couldn't be bothered by the plight of the people. The federal signed a memorandum of understanding, an agreement, with this union that ended a nine month long strike, and you would think that agreement would be honored to avoid a repeat of such strike. But not if you are dealing with these wicked men. Remember, their own children and family members are schooling overseas with the resources belonging to all of us.

During the days of the military juntas most Nigerians prayed for return to democracy. In 1999 when Abacha suddenly dropped dead most people in the country believed God had finally come to rescue Nigeria. But 23 years later we have found out that it didn't matter who was ruling Nigeria, military juntas or elected officials, the commonality is they are Nigerians, and Nigerian leaders are corrupt.

Federal universities should never hire any lecturer that belongs to ASUU. In the past ten years ASUU have been on strike four months every year, so when do they get to deliver lecturers? They are turning out graduates that a little better than secondary school kids, but keep asking for more money.

Isn't it a shame that in Nigeria a professor has to go work elsewhere in order to make ends meet? Have you ever heard of our senators, no even councillors managing two or 3 other jobs just so as to provide succour for their families.

MY SUGGESTION

Nigeria does not need a leader what we need is a ruler
